This is your day of arrival, you’ll be greeted by our staff at the Kona International Airport and transferred to your hotel, followed by a short briefing for the next day. The afternoon / evening is open for a leisurely stroll to downtown Kailua.
Let the adventure begin! On the first day of riding we’re heading south through the Kona Coffee Belt at a cooler elevation. Along the way we’ll pass Captain Cook and Honaunau, the agriculture heart of the west coast. At the half way point we stop at Kealakekua Bay, where Captain Cook landed in 1779. Going back heading north we ascend from sea level to 1500’ before we ride back down to our hotel.
Another challenge waits for you today. After a short shuttle to our starting point, we gently climb
to 600’ elevation, we’ll stop for a short break to reload our fluids and start our 13-mile ascent to the top of the Kohala Mountain Range at 3509 feet. A rewarding 16-mile winding and fast downhill ride to the finish will end the ride. Short shuttle back to the hotel.
Today’s ride will test your endurance and climbing abilities. We’ll start at sea level and climb to the famous top of Kaloko Dr . A continuous 13-14%+ grade will make this ride a real challenge.
There will be time in the afternoon to explore nearby markets and the village of Kailua.
We’re leaving Kona and drive to the Pahoa area in the early morning. This day is designed to recover from the last couple of days. Smooth rolling hills along the ocean and only a little bit of climbing get you ready for the next grueling day. Stroll along downtown Hilo’s Waterfront or relax in the afternoon at the pool-side of you hotel.
This is the absolute highlight of your Big Island Extreme Tour. 34 miles, 9300 feet of vertical. After a short warm-up we’ll start climbing toward our finish line at 9200’, the Mauna Kea Visitors Center. You’ll be impressed by the landscape changes along the way. Shuttle back to Kona.
At the farewell breakfast you can reminisce about the past week and say, “Aloha” to all of the friends you’ve made during your tour. Then you are free to relax and prepare for your departure. We’ll take you to the airport and send you on your way to your next destination.
